Why Choose Hawaii Solar Outfitters, Off-Grid Solar Installer on the Big Island
Off-Grid Specialist
I Test Before I Recommend
Direct Accountability
I specialize exclusively in off-grid power systems designed for Hawaii's unique climate. No HELCO queues, no permitting delays—just reliable energy independence.
Every component I install has been real-world tested. We use advanced load testing to ensure your system performs exactly as promised, even during extended cloudy periods.
No sales teams, no commissions, no middle-men. You work directly with me as I design and install your system, ensuring clear communication and total accountability from start to finish.
Is Your Off-Grid Solar Running the Generator Too Much?
If your off-grid system isn't keeping up — batteries not holding charge, generator running daily, power running out before the day does — I'll come take a real look. The Off-Grid System Health Check includes: Battery load testing under real conditions, not a guess; Full site analysis of your panels, wiring, and system sizing; A clear report on what's actually wrong and what fixing it would cost. It's free, with no obligation. You only pay if you decide to move forward with an upgrade.

Starting around $35,000–$45,000 installed
What's Inside a Typical System
- Qcells solar panels — UL listed, U.S.-manufactured, 25-year warranty
- EG4 hybrid inverters — built for off-grid reliability
- EG4 LiFePO4 battery storage — built to handle Hawaii's heat and humidity
I don't cut corners on equipment. These are the same components used in professional off-grid installs across the islands, sized right for your property, not oversold.
Need a Grid-Tied System Instead?
Off-grid is where I do my best, fastest work — but I also install grid-tied, HELCO-interconnected systems on request. Ask me about it during your site visit.
What About Tax Credits?
The federal 30% solar tax credit expired December 31, 2025, and no longer applies.
Hawaii's state tax credit (35% of system cost, up to $5,000) is still available in 2026, but it's being phased down ahead of a 2030 sunset — so the earlier you act, the more of it you can claim.
Off-grid and grid-tied systems may qualify differently depending on your setup. I'll walk you through what applies to your specific project during your site visit.
About Hawaii Solar Outfitters
I'm Tim Heltzel, and I've been doing solar and off-grid installation work on the Big Island for 10 years. I started Hawaii Solar Outfitters because I got tired of seeing East Hawaii homeowners either priced out by big companies with sales teams and commissions, or stuck waiting months for permits and HELCO interconnection on land that never needed to go through that process in the first place.
I handle every job myself — design, install, and follow-up. No rotating crews, no sales reps. If you ever need me after the install, I'm the same person who'll show up.
Based in Pahoa / East Hawaii, serving Hilo, Keaau, Pahoa, Mountain View, Fern Forest, Fern Acres Volcano and surrounding areas.
